The prefecture of Messinia, located to the south west of the Peloponnese is a region of magic and beauty. The capital town and main port of Messinia is Kalamata.
Kalamata is a very modern town, with excellent infrastructure and local facilities. Kalamata is one of the most gifted cities in Greece, mostly thanks to its geographic position.
Situated in the heart of the crystal-blue Messinian Bay and on the roots of the imposing Mountain Taygetos, it is a heaven for its inhabitants. Also, Kalamata is the ideal base for those who want to discover the secrets of Messinia, since it is situated in a central spot of the region and all the tourist and cultural destinations are not further than one hour in car.
Kalamata International Airport is one of the main airports of Greece and caters to a lot of international tourists visiting the country, since there are many new direct flights from around Europe.
The town of Kalamata is dominated by the 13th century castle which was built above it. From the castle, visitors are offered wonderful views towards the sea and sandy beaches, as well as the green flourishing plains. The famous Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti is located in the town.
This church is well known for the nuns who weave the famous Kalamata silk. There are also several other churches around the town which are nice to visit. In Kalamata, as well as enjoying the beauty of the region and the hospitality of the locals, there is also the archaeological and folklore museum, and the library which houses over 60,000 volumes of work.
Such attractions are a nice way to experience the history and past of the region, as well as the modern side of it. There are also plenty cultural events and festivals that take place throughout the year, to which everyone is invited.
Kalamata is renowned as the place where the famous Kalamatianos dance originated. A perfect symbol for the rich culture and vibrancy of this region, the dance is widely known and you can easily find places throughout the town offering traditional performances, such as restaurants with regular evening entertainment.
Moreover, Kalamata is the famous home of the best olives and olive oil in the world, as well as figs, and delicacies such as pastelli (sesame and honey sweet), lalagia (sweet bread twists that are deep fried), sfela cheese and balsamic vinegar with tones of figs.
It is about 60km away from the famous Costa Navarino Golf resort and close to numerous worldwide famous beaches like the Sadova, Foneas and Kalogria ones. The beaches in Kalamata are arguably some of the most beautiful in Greece. The variety of Kalamata's landscape adds to its natural beauty. You will find luscious beaches, ancient sites, clip top coasts, secluded coves, lush valleys, wild rivers and breathtakingly beautiful mountains from where the views are amazing.
The prefecture of Messinia is being habited for thousand years, with a great history as a background. Witnesses of its long history are the countless classical, byzantine and newer monuments in the prefecture. Monuments and cultural inheritance of Messinia, in combination with the beautiful landscape that surrounds them, give a magic power to Messinia, that captures even the most demanding visitor.
Some of the places that are worth visiting are Kalamata city, Pilos, Methoni, Koroni towns, Ancient Messene, Neda River, Voidokilia beach, Kardamili village, Pollimnio Waterfalls.
Ancient Messene is a significant ancient city in terms of its size, form, and state of preservation, and still has much to offer. It possesses not only sanctuaries and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications, and houses and tombs. Αmidst the peaks of Mt. Tetrazio, at the northern end of Messinia, Neda, the only female-gender river of Greece, flows towards the gulf of Kiparissia.
Kardamili is a spectacularly beautiful seaside village located in Mani, the coast of Greece defined by travel connoisseurs as the New Côte d'Azur. Set dramatically against a backdrop of crystalline aqua-blue waters, majestic cypress trees, wild olive groves, verdant rolling hills and distant snowcapped mountains, it is one of the prettiest of villages that overlook the calm seas and splendid sunsets of the Messinian Gulf.
Voidokilia beach, which is situated at 12 km from the city of Pylos, in the north of the Navarino bay, is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, but maybe also in the Mediterranean Sea. The sheltered bay is referred to in Homer's Odyssey and archaeologists believe it was used by King Nestor as a port in ancient times.
Polilimnio Canyon is a magic place with waterfalls and lakes, beautiful wooden bridges that seems it is a hidden paradise.
Visitors will be astonished by the wealth waiting for them in the form of local cuisine and will surprisingly discover the fundamental relation between food and enjoyment to the Greek everyday life.
