Equipment
The committee does not require each athlete to carry certain equipment. The use of trekking poles is also allowed. Every athlete is responsible for choosing the pot (cup, canister, bottle, flask, etc), which he/she must bring in order to accept the right quantities of liquids. The quantities of liquids will be given with a practical doser from the Supply Station’s staff. Each athlete may take ONE gel from the stations where it is provided. The transport of water bags or backpacks or waist bags in general is allowed. The abandonment of a backpack along the route to the points of the central stations is at the responsibility of the athlete.

Routes
Start Time of the 30.5Km Trail Race: 8:00 am
Start Line: Mandilara Square in the main harbor of Naxos
Course: The long race of Sunday races is 30.5 km. and has a positive altitude of 1150 m. The start is given at Mandilara Square in the port of Naxos and immediately after 200m we are entering a beach. We run in the sand for 350m and climb slightly on a dirt path. After we pass through houses (cement road) in the village of Grotta, we will follow a path of dirt. We run on a wonderful hump for 800m and next to us we have the sea. We descend to a beach and immediately climb up the asphalt. Volunteers here make sure we cross safely and we follow a strongly uphill path. We pass through a chapel and climb up sharply. We are at 2.5 km, which is also the most technical part (auxiliary ropes) but also the most impressive as we pass through a cave!

We arrive at the monastery of Chrysostom where our 2.9 km is and there is a water supply station (SU.STA.1). We follow an uphill steep little dirt road and reach a volunteer at the entrance of the path. We are now in a mountainous landscape and we pass through stone buildings that are old lawns (samples of local architecture). On our right we have the Xilokastro peak (336m) while we run in the west direction and soon we reach the picturesque chapel of Ag. Fokas at 4.8 km. Continue in the south direction and at 5.3 km we arrive at a central dirt road where our volunteer shows our course (here the long and the short race are being separated).

We follow the dirt road west downhill and at 5.8km we turn left and enter a trail. Xerolithies divide us from the fields and soon we reach the creek and we go to the asphalt. We pass vertically and enter a small alley in the settlement. We pass through the village of Engares from a paved alley. There is the SU.STA.2 (7.9 km) with full coverage of liquids and food.

After we leave the village, we follow a gorge with a great path. A gentle uphill in the west direction brings us to a bridge at 11.5 km, perhaps the most beautiful part of the race. A few meters after the bridge, we retreat the path that becomes a cobbled path and quite uphill. It ends on a dirt road that leads us to the village of Kinidaros at an altitude of 450m. We cross the beautiful alleys of the village and meet the SU.STA.3 (14.3 km) with full coverage in liquids and food.

We climb in a narrow alley and we reach the asphalt road on which we run (volunteers take care of our security) for 350m. At 14.9 km we enter a path between fields with horticulture and we reach a dirt road. We follow it and at the point where we meet asphalt road we turn right into an impressive path on a rock. We run over the famous marble quarries that are still in operation today. At 17.2 km we pass a vertical asphalt road (volunteers lead us) and we follow a gently uphill old dirt road that leads us to a deserted marble quarry. We descend on a path and through old fields we reach a river without water. Impressive running through the rocks of the riverbed that leads us to the Flerio area. Here small deviations lead us to the well-known "Kouros" of Naxos. Of course at 19km we also come across the SU.STA.4.

We follow the cobbled path of the area (the best preserved area) and reach the settlement "Myloi". It owes its name to many watermills. Even today we will see a beautiful waterfall at 20.2 km. We turn abruptly to the left and descend a path with a great incline leading us to the river. A small rural road brings us to the village of Melanes. Through a picturesque island paved, we reach SU.STA. 5 (21.3 km).

We climb up from the village and descend to the river. Then we cross a vertical asphalt road (volunteers show us the course) and we follow a dirt road. The easy terrain helps us to recover forces on the last hill. We pass by the village of Ag. Thuleleos and we climb abruptly through dirt trails. At 25.1 km we come across the small route and we will share the last section. Here is also SU.STA.6.

We are entering a dirt trail in the east direction. We pass through stunning boulders and pastures. We arrive at 26.5 km on a small dirt road and we follow it on a strong downhill slope. Soon we reach 27.5 km at the refueling station (SU.STA. 7) which is the first we met after the start. The next 2km are common to the first of the route so that we can enjoy the passage through the cave. Shortly before the finish we will change course and make the round of the Castle. We will pass through scenic alleys running on a cobbled path. Eventually we will go to the paved beach. We will run the last 400m passing in front of the beachfront shops and enjoying the applause of the inhabitants of Naxos!

A kilometer index is found at every kilometer along the course.

Time limit: The time limit for each runner to complete the 30.5Km Trail Race is set at 5 hours. All runners should finish by 13:00 pm.

Start Time of the 11km Trail Race: 08:00 am
Start Line: Mandilara Square in the main harbor of Naxos
Course: The short race of the Sunday races is 11km and has a positive altitude of +430m. Until the 5.3km the route follows the route of the long (30.5km) race. After that we follow the dirt road and at 5.8km we meet the station with full coverage in liquids and food (SU.STA. 2). We are entering a dirt trail in the east direction. We pass through stunning boulders and pastures. We arrive at 7 km on a small dirt road and we follow it on a strong downhill slope. Soon we reach 8 km refueling station (SU.STA. 3) which is the first we encountered after the start. The next 2km are common to the first of the route so that we can enjoy the passage through the cave. Shortly before the finish (10.2 km) we will change course and make the round of the Castle. We will pass through scenic alleys running on a cobbled path. Eventually we will go to the paved beach. We will run the last 400m passing in front of the beachfront shops and enjoying the applause of the inhabitants of Naxos!

naxos run view2

Naxos is the most attractive and beautiful island in
Cyclades and it is an excellent destination for all kind of interests. It is a resort for young and old, families and singles, people who really enjoy the sea and the sun, people with special interests such as civilization and history, people who enjoy activities such as hiking biking, surfing, kiting, diving, 4×4 driving, yachting. Naxos has the cosmopolitan air of a modern tourist resort while it has managed to preserve its local culture and traditional color.

Naxos island has numerous places for all kind of interests to visit like monuments, archaeological places, churches, castle, museums, and unique landscape. The 3000 years history is a promise for sightseeing, exploration, and discovery.

Naxos Beaches are among the best in Greece (over 40 kilometers of beaches). It has superior endless beaches with fine golden or white sand, quiet or crowded, with tourist infrastructure or remote, with deep or shallow waters, such as those at Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Alikos, Kastraki, Mikri Vigla, Plaka, and Saint George (Agios Georgios), most of them near Naxos Town (Hora). Naxos Town on the west coast is the island’s port and capital which feels like four towns joined together: the port with the waterfront, the Old Town with the Venetian Castle (Kastro), Saint George with the so-named beach.
More than 64 villages, most of which are mountainous, cover its slopes. They are well known for their excellent cool climate and their unsurpassed local cuisine. On Naxos, there are two areas that were recently entered in the network “Natura 2000″ and were characterized as the land of European interest: the island’s central highlands and the southern coastal zone (Zas-Vigla-Mavrovouni) as well as Aliki, located on the southwestern coast of Naxos.

In mythology, Naxos was linked with the wedding of Dionysus and Ariadne, a union that blessed the island with its fertility and its distinctive wine, which was highly prized in the ancient world. Naxos is one of the few Cycladic islands, which has been inhabited continuously since the dawn of civilization: archaeological evidence indicates the presence of permanent settlements already in the end of the 4th millennium BC. From the many archaeological remains in which all historical periods are richly represented - much has been learnt about the history of the Aegean.
